History and Context of the School
Malpas Park Primary School is situated on the outskirts of Newport and has the capacity to provide education for 210 pupils aged 4-11 plus a nursery with a capacity of 32 children making a total of 242. There are currently 207 pupils on roll for years Reception to Year 6 plus Nursery has 25 pupils making a total currently on role 232 pupils (these figures are as at September 2018).
The school serves a densely populated area in the Malpas ward, north-west of the city. Pupils are drawn from a wide area, many from out of catchment, and are neither prosperous nor economically disadvantaged.
There are currently one Nursery class, three Foundation Phase classes and four Key Stage 2 classes.
Malpas Park Primary School has extensive grounds which serve the pupils outdoor education and enhance the teaching of Nursey, Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 curriculum. The school has excellent resources and accommodation, especially in the context of it being an older school built in the 1960s. Staff and pupils within the school use all areas of the building to its full potential.
Malpas Park Primary School opened in 1966 in order to serve the Malpas Park private estate erected on the eastern side of Malpas Road. The social mix of pupils at that time was very different from that of today.
The school has achieved the fourth Basic Skills Quality Mark, the second leaf of the Healthy Schools' Award, the Gold Green Flag and has the ASD Friendly Accreditation.
